4 Israeli soldiers killed in Hezbollah drone strike as tensions soar

Four soldiers have been killed and more the 60 injured in a drone strike by Hezbollah on an Israeli military base. We take a look at what’s happening, as conflict in the region escalates.

Most fatal raid since start of war

Four soldiers died in the pre-dawn drone raid on an Israeli army base in central Israel carried out by Hezbollah early Sunday and another seven were wounded, four of them seriously. The attack, among the worst bombings by Hezbollah in current conflict dating to October 2023, also wounded at least 61 others. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had opened an inquiry into how the drone was able to fly 30 minutes across occupied territory, evading Israeli air defences.

Reprisal for Beirut Attacks

Responsibility was claimed by Hezbollah in revenge, it said, for Israeli bombings of Beirut on Thursday which killed 22 people. The group not only sought the elite Golani brigade of Israel, but it also employed a multi-missile and drone system attack which targeted some air defense systems in action.

US Sends Israel Air Defense Support

As the danger increasingly rear its head, the US said it will deliver an unparalleled anti-missile protection system to Israel, along with troops to run it. The move follows a wave of audacious Iranian assaults on Israel this year that have spurred concerned about the efficacy of existing air defenses.

Caught in the Crossfire; UN Peacekeepers

Tensions are on the rise and human rights remains a top concern for many, including Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) positioned as part of 14 previous attacks employing artillery fire — calculated machinations often behind enemy lines that could threaten UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon. Israeli fire has wounded several peacekeepers in recent incidents. The UN described the incidents as a “clear violation of international law” and Israel claimed Hezbollah used the areas near peacekeepers’ positions to operate. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has called for the UN to pull peacekeepers out of conflict areas, branding them a “human shield” for Hezbollah.

Israel Targets Gaza: Scores Die

An Israeli airstrike in Gaza on Sunday killed 40 people, including 13 children. During the nine days, a little over 300 souls were lost in bombings at Gaza’s largest refugee camp. There was no respite, either, from Israel’s military offensive in northern Gaza — evacuation orders were issued for hospitals and food supplies blocked. Palestinian officials said the bodies were left in parts of Gaza City which had no prior casualties because they could not reach those areas due to continued assaults.

Lebanon: Violence Spreads

The fighting in Lebanon rages on with Israeli ground forces launching an operation earlier this month to clear Hezbollah away from the border. Since September, more than 1,400 people have died in Lebanon as a whole — civilians and suspected Hezbollah fighters. Meanwhile, an Israeli airstrike destroyed a historic Ottoman-era market in Nabatiyeh on Sunday — killing one person and injuring four.

Israel/State of Palestine: Gaza Humanitarian Crisis Deepening

Gaza’s deepening crisis amid Israeli offensives → No food has entered northern Gaza since October 1, according to the UN and evacuation orders are also in effect for hospitals. The Health Ministry in Gaza has also said it is unable to collect many of the dead and that dogs have begun eating remains.
