Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples’ Day 2024: What’s Open/Closed

Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples’ Day 2024: What’s Open/Closed

Monday, October 14: Columbus Day (or Indigenous Peoples’ Day — which is this very deep divisive national issue and it depends on if your state recognizes either holiday) While Columbus Day means many federal services and institutions shut down for the day, Indigenous Peoples’ Day is an attempt to recognize Native Americans, their contributions and history. A breakdown of what will be open and closed can be found below.

Columbus Day vs. Indigenous Peoples’ Day: Knowing the Difference

Columbus Day, a federal holiday honoring Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas. Nevertheless, in numerous states and cities this holiday has been supplanted or combined with Indigenous Peoples’ Day to commemorate the history and heritage of Native Americans. In 2021, President Joe Biden issued the first-ever national proclamation recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day and detailing decades of federal policies that displaced Native communities and sought to destroy their culture.

Just Like In Any Other Federal Holiday, Post Offices Will Be Closed And So Simply You Only Have Some Alternatives

The United States Postal Service (USPS) will NOT deliver mail on October 14, as they observe Columbus Day along with other federal holidays. Mail deliveries and post office services will be closed. Private carriers such as UPS and FedEx will generally operate, although some services for FedEx Express and Ground Economy may be affected.

Banks closed: Federal Reserve holiday; some banks also may be closed.

Monday is a federal holiday when all Federal Reserve banks, including Bank of America (BofA), Wells Fargo and Citibank will be closed. Chase Bank and TD bank opened some of their branches though. We have not blocked your access to online banking or ATMs, so you may continue doing all the necessary things digitally.

Schools – Different Schools, Closure and Observance

School closures are district-specific.

Chicago Public Schools: Closed in recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Columbus Day will be observed as a holiday with schools closed in Indian Prairie School District #204 (Aurora, Naperville, Bolingbrook and Plainfield)

They will not be observed and Elgin Area School District U46 classes remain closed on both days.

Community High School District 218 (Palos Heights, Oak Lawn and Blue Island) will also be closed in observance of the holiday.

Others could see classes continue to be held, depending upon whether officials recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Most Government Services Closed

It is a federal holiday so the DMV, courts and most state offices will be closed. The state of Illinois observes Indigenous Peoples’ Day on the last Monday in September, a law that took effect following passage by the General Assembly in 2017. But Monday will still be a holiday for federal and state buildings because it is Columbus Day.

Garbage Collection: Delays in Certain Regions

Chicago: No trash collection, otherwise regular schedule. While your designated pickup day may not be on a Monday, the holiday still has an impact on garbage and recycling schedules throughout the week. Please check with your local waste management services for the latest information.

Essential Retailers and Grocery Stores: Open on a case-by-case basis

Major retailers, grocery stores and restaurants such as Target (TGT), Walmart (WMT) and Costco will be open regular hours. But still, it’s never a bad idea to call ahead or check online for individual store hours.

Libraries: Mostly Open

While some locations will waive fees entirely until the issue is fully resolved, libraries in general are expected to remain open but may not be able to offer all services during this period. Check with your local library on hours in operation.

Now Open: The Stock Market

Columbus Day will not impact trading… The Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange will operate as normal in observance of Columbus Day. But bond markets will be closed.
