HBO — Filmmaker Discovers Bitcoin Creator

The identity of Bitcoin’s creator, still known only as Satoshi Nakamoto and who created the first proof of work. Enter Cullen Hoback, a documentary filmmaker famous for his investigations into internet mysteries, who may have now solved the mystery. In his forthcoming HBO expose Money Electric: The Bitcoin Conspiracy, Hoback argues that the real Nakamoto might have actually been a Canadian developer named Peter Todd, who was once an outside candidate.

The Road to Bitcoin’s Creator, We Think!

Satoshi Nakamoto is one of the most teased enigmas on the entire internet. Nakamoto, whoever he or she or they are, would control a cryptocurrency fortune worth at least 1 million bitcoins through today’s value — or about $65 billion by current exchange rates. While there is no name or face behind it, this mystery figure could someday be the richest person on Earth many times over as Bitcoin’s value continues to increase.

The years have seen many efforts to reveal Nakamoto, all of which have failed. Suspects so far have ranged from encryption students to coders and even those who may be criminal masterminds of tomorrow. Now, Hoback has a new theory — Peter Todd, an early college student into bitcoin.

Is Peter Todd Nakamoto? A Cullen Hoback Investigation

The Cullen Hoback HBO documentary does not claim to have fishy proof Peter Todd is Satoshi Nakamoto, but it does generate clues that seem a bit peculiar. Hoback makes the speculative leap from these forum posts and a bizarre 2010 meeting Todd had with Nakamoto. Todd replied to Nakamoto in a longstanding forum exchange only 90 minutes after Nakamoto had suggested a Bitcoin fix, even though Todd later claimed he knew nothing about Bitcoin at the time.

Hoback speculates that Todd perhaps mistakenly responded to himself from the wrong alias and confused which of those aliases was a proxy for “Nakamoto.” A few days later, Nakamoto vanished from the web; Todd would soon go silent for years.

Denies the Claim: Peter Todd

Peter Todd refutes claims of his being the inventor of Bitcoin. In an email to The Washington Post, Todd — who spoke on the condition that his last name be removed due to safety concerns if Bitcoin is worth as much as early securities analyst think it might be — said he was baffled by people who set out to crack Nakamoto’s identity.(K.) He also cautioned that naming anyone as Nakamoto could put their life at risk from extortions and robberies, depending on just how much money they believe Nakamoto controls.

Before the documentary became public, Todd said he planned to get out of town in fear that it might lead to violence.

Are the Clues Just Coincidence or Evidence of Peter Todd?

Hoback goes onto a number of other interesting coincidences in his investigation. Todd majored in computer science at university, and thus has the programming chops of an amatuer — namely, Satoshi Nakamoto. Also, other writings by Nakamoto occurred during the summers (a time when school is out —like maybe student Todd. Nakamoto had also employed British spellings, which Hoback notes are typically used by Todd due to his Canadian background.

Todd laughed his way through those claims during a dramatic confrontation in the documentary. He called it a “creative” but ultimately wrong idea.

The ‘Unmasking’ of Nakamoto and How it Impacts Us

Satoshi Nakamoto’s identity has always been of interest due to the power such a person could wield, holding so many Bitcoins. The transparency of the cryptocurrency world could be revolutionized with solving this mystery in Cullen Hoback’s perspective. Bitcoin has been growing in value and relevance from a financial perspective, to one that has great weight on the world stage including global economics, political influence and yes even held as a possible source of making good the national debt.

IS THIS ONE MYSTERY THAT WILL ALWAYS REMAIN A MYSTERY?

It should be noted that Cullen Hoback is not the first journalist to try uncovering Nakamoto’s real identity and he definitely won’t be the last one. Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery is yet another page in one of the great mysteries of our time as despite multiple prior inquiries this enigma has remained unresolved. We¡¯ll leave the question of whether or not Peter Todd is Nakamoto right here for the audience to decide, like this whole charade of its creator does…and thus to keep striking the bitcoin community.
